To Attack or not to attack in the opening?

Attacking Chess 3 – IM Valeri Lilov

Valeri explains how to attack in the opening without using a gambit. He shows us a Classic encounter from a 1920’s game that features a French Defense variation 3…Nf6 4.Bg5 dxe4 5. Nxe4 Be7. Valeri then outlines the importance of ‘playing actively’ and ‘maintaining active Knights’ rather than trading pieces.

A quick g4 in the opening can start the immediate attack to ‘gain space’ on the King-side which can then transform to a more concrete and direct attack in the opening. Valeri is keen to show that ‘punishing the opponent for breaking chess rules’ is an important element in deciding when to ‘successfully attack in the opening’.
