Just because you’ve got the Black pieces, it doesn’t mean you have to passively play for equality for the first 20 moves. Choose one of the best chess openings for Black, chess openings that give you attacking counterplay from the first moves.

In this video, Roman Dzindzichashvili points out some opening novelties in the best chess opening for Black against 1.e4: the Sicilian Defense, Accelerated Dragon variation.

Roman “Dzindzi” talks about the main of the Accelerated Dragon with 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 g6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Bg7 5.Be3 Nf6 6.Nc3 Nc6 7.Bc4.

White has developed well, getting all 4 minor pieces to central squares while maintaining a powerful pawn on e4. Black stands well too, 3 minor pieces well positioned and ready to castle.

Still, Black has one “problem”: developing his light-squared bishop. In the Accelerated Dragon variation of the Sicilian Defense, Black leaves out …d6 in the hope of playing d7-d5 in one move later on.

So what does Black do? Castle? Move the b or d-pawn to allow the bishop to move? Exchange knights on d4 first? None of these. Black plays …Qa5! taking advantage of the loose positioning of White’s pieces and setting up a pin against the c3 knight.

Already, it’s very easy for White to go wrong in a surprisingly quick way. If White tries to break the pin with the natural 8.Nb3, .Qb4! maintains the pin, attacks the unprotected c4 bishop and x-rays the e4 pawn. Now, moves like 9.Qd3 and 9.Bd3 lose material and Black has a great game.

GM Roman Dzindzichashvili shows how Black can use some sneaky, clever moves at their disposal to free their position rapidly, all the while setting mini-traps for White to fall into.
