The FIDE World Chess Championship 2013 began today as defending World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand (IND) was able to force a quick draw against the 2013 World Chess Championship Challenger Magnus Carlsen (NOR). Although Magnus Carlsen is no stranger to the immense pressure associated with premier chess competitions, the World Chess Championship is a different kind of beast and Carlsen’s play was timid and off the mark today as he employed a double-fianchetto opening that Anand was easily able to neutralize. In fact by move 10 of Round 1 of the 2013 World Chess Championship, Anand was already beginning to press with the black pieces as Carlsen’s pawn structure in the center was slightly overextended and exposed. Round 2 of the 2013 World Chess Championship takes place on November 10th, and Anand will have the opportunity to demonstrate his renown preparation with the white pieces as both players battle it out for a prize fund of $1 million Euros!
