The King’s Indian Defense is the most double-edged response for black against 1. d4, by far maintaining the most decisive results of all the queen pawn opening systems. The reason for this is very simple – black immediately creates imbalances in the position by allowing white to create a large space advantage in the center (normally with pawns on c4, d4, and e4) while black calmly develops his kingside fianchetto and plans a targeted strike in the center, typically on the dark squares with thrusts ..c7-c5 or ..e7-e5. The King’s Indian Defense is extremely dynamic and is definitely recommended for the tactical player as insanely wild attacks are very common. In many of the main lines, the center becomes locked and black plays for an attack on the kingside while white aims to exploit a central space advantage by opening up the queenside. In the following chess video excerpt from the 3 hour chess DVD ¨Conquer with the King’s Indian Defense¨ Grandmaster Leonid Kritz explains black’s best responses against one of white’s most outwardly dangerous systems – the Four Pawns Attack!
