In 1981, Garry Kasparov was only 18 years old and working his way towards the world chess championship match in 1983. Grandmaster Ulf Andersson was playing exceptionally well, renown for being a top theoretician of the time. Kasparov and Andersson faced off in a complicated variation of the Queen’s Indian Defense (later named the Andersson Variation!) — although the vast majority of elite players in today’s game shy away from this system due to the highly convincing method of attack demonstrated by Kasparov in this very game! This variation is characterized by a rapid simplification that grants white valuable time to consolidate and direct his attacking forces. This classic game from the early 80s perfectly illustrates the impressive attacking style of the former World Chess Champion, Garry Kasparov.
