My opponent played 1. e4 and I responded with the Sicilian Defense, specifically a sideline with the early 4. …Qb6 – immediately putting the question to white’s knight on d4. I continued with normal development and chose to fianchetto my light-squared bishop on the queenside, resulting in a structure very similar to the Hedgehog Defense. White has more space in the center and prospects of a kingside attack, however black’s position is extremely solid, he has no weaknesses, and black also can break open the center with moves like e5 and d5 at any point. With the attentive 18. …Ba6 and 19 …Nd4 I think black had already achieved a sizable advantage, however in time-trouble I snatched a poisoned pawn with 25. …Qxc3?? that should have lost the game on the spot to 26. Be4 – however my opponent was also in time-trouble and I was lucky that he missed this winning tactic. I was able to consolidate my position and proceeded to win the game on time.
