Fabiano Caruana had an interesting game against Erwin L’Ami in the eighth round of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament from the year 2013. In this video, Grandmaster Damian Lemos analyzes the battle that took place at Wijk aan zee, move by move, giving his expert opinion.

The Wijk aan zee chess tournament (also known as the Tata Steel Chess Tournament) takes place each year in The Netherlands, and is one of the most prestigious tournaments on the calendar. It always features the strongest players from all over the world, while regular club players are also welcome to enter. Famous winners through the years include Max Euwe, Boris Spassky, Mikhail Botvinnik, Mikhail Tal, Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov, Magnus Carlsen and many others – Magnus Carlsen currently holds the record with six tournament wins (he would go on to win in 2013).

The American Grandmaster Caruana started with 1. e4, and his Dutch oppoent Grandmaster L’Ami responded with 1…c6, which is the beginning of the Caro-Kann Defense. After 2. d4 d5 3. e5, the players entered the advanced variation. GM Lemos briefly covers some of the other available options here, such as the exchange variation. The Caro-Kann is similar to The French or Sicilian defenses in that it is traditionally a somewhat semi-open game, but it is considered to be more solid and a little less dynamic than those defenses. Black’s strategy is to look for a good endgame where they have a better pawn structure.

In this game, however, we see how Fabiano Caruana brilliantly steered the game with aggressive play that led to a positional endgame where White’s space advantage played a big and decisive role. It’s a game we can all learn from for when we face off against the Caro-Kann, or if we’re looking to improve our positional play.
