Grischuk opens with the Advance Variation against the French Defense and plays the popular 6. a3 line, to which Short responds powerfully with 6. …f6 – immediately attempting to exploit´s white´s extended pawn center and relative lack of development. Black continues with 7. …Qc7 to generate more pressure against white´s e5 pawn and declares strong aggressive intentions with opposite-sides castling on 8. …0-0-0. Out of the opening black had achieved a very promising position, demonstrating an effective response for black against the 6. a3 line in the Advance Variation of the French Defense.
