Korchnoi opens with 1. d4 and Kasparov responds with the sharp Benoni Defense, leading to white playing the Fianchetto Variation. Kasparov employs one of the most complicated continuations called the Hastings Defense with 13. …Ne5 and 14. …Nh5 – leading to a very unusual position where black leaves his knight hanging on e5 for 7 consecutive moves before Korchnoi finally gives in an and captures with 24. fxe5 – leading to a very difficult defense as this considerably weakens white’s control of the dark squares on the kingside. Kasparov continues extremely energetically and forces Korchnoi to sacrifice his queen on 30. Qxf2 – leading to a winning material advantage that Kasparov successfully converted on 36. …Qxh3+.
