Positional chess is the art of constantly improving your position, exploiting your opponent’s weaknesses and accurately evaluating a position.

Most club players are much better tactically than positionally and can struggle to make progress against cautious players or in closed positions.

In order to improve in this area, it is good practice to study how masters breakdown stubborn players and win these games.

To help you with this, GM Damian Lemos has put together a fantastic new DVD called “Positional Mastery” which shows how the best players provoke weaknesses in their opponent’s position and then take advantage of them.

Covering topics like winning pawn formations, the art of purposeful manoeuvring in closed positions and how to improve your pieces with every move, “Positional Mastery” will give you new weapons to beat even the strongest players.

In this free preview, GM Lemos shows how GM Yuri Balashov, once ranked 11th in the world, destroys his opponent Nadezhdin through powerful positional play.

Starting with a Closed Sicilian, Balashov first forces his opponent to give him a key square for his Knight before provoking Black to weaken his King position. Natural developing moves put Black under pressure and he just isn’t able to activate his pieces properly. In a few moves, Balashov creates a series of threats that overwhelm his opponent leaving him completely lost without making any serious mistakes.

This is a brilliant example of forceful positional chess which will give you some great ideas to use in your own games!

Enjoy this video and check out the DVD.
