When a Super GM attacks they do a few things differently compared to a club player.

They assess the position to confirm that they should attack
They identify the weakest point in their opponent’s position
They make sure they are not leaving themselves open to a counter-attack
They time the attack perfectly – never too soon, never too late
They make sure that all the pieces they need will be able to join in quickly – clear communication lines
All this is easier said than done. How exactly do they do this and guarantee a successful attack?

This is the topic of “Attack Like a Super GM”, a 2.5 hour DVD from GM Damian Lemos which will teach you how to:

accurately determine the conditions for an attack
devise the quickest routes and move orders to bring all your pieces to the attack
balance the attack with defensive duties
intuitively know when the ideal moment to breakthrough is.
In this preview, Lemos analyzes the game between Ludek Pachman and Wallis. GM Pachman was the national champion of Czechoslovakia and later West Germany, author of the classic book “Modern Chess Strategy” and beat Bobby Fischer – twice!

Watch how, on the White side of a Tarrasch Defense, Pachman lines his Bishops up against his opponent’s King before bringing each of his other pieces to an increasingly active position, each time creating new threats that force his opponent on the defensive.

Black’s resistance is impressive but he has to keep making concessions. Then we see how a top Grandmaster brings home the full point.
